Avoid this mistake when buying an old home
If you’re looking to buy an older home, during inspections you’ll want to find out what kind of piping the house has. Before 1960 galvanized pipes were very common in homes. They do last awhile but they corrode from the inside out, which means they may look ok from the outside, but inside rust builds up and that buildup can cause low water pressure, clogs and leaks.
Also, the zinc coating erodes and lead can leach into the water. So, see what kind of piping the house has and you might want to think about doing a water test to see about that water quality.
My home was built in 1927 and we had original galvanized pipes in the downstairs of our house until we heard a hissing sound in the basement - the pipes were bursting and water was spraying everywhere. Don’t make the same mistake we did. Luckily we didn’t have much water damage to our home but that can be a very expensive headache! If the house you’re looking to buy has galvanized pipes, I would recommend only buying it if you can financially plan to replace all of the piping soon.
